ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2009) — Imagine if all you had to do to charge your iPod or your BlackBerry was to wave your hand, or stretch your arm, or take a walk? You could say goodbye to batteries and never have to plug those devices into a power source again.

In research presented at the American [...]

Know your Physics

Your IQ is about 147
A silly facebook propaganda quiz — 10 easy multiple choice questions.  Of note — I did have to know that power delivered to a light bulb can be measured in Watts   That helped me go 10 for 10.
Moral of the story — you have got to know your physics!

Especially for Wendy –
(I promised I would send along some more detailed information)
We have been talking about AC Power and differences between EU and North American systems in our physics 54 class.
Here are some links with additional information:
Wikipedia Article – Mains Electricity
Another quite interesting historical tidbit concerns the “War of Currents” between Edison, an advocate [...]

Another example of cutting edge science pushing the frontiers of electrical energy delivery devices — I recently posted about an idea for an AC generator which harnesses tidal or current energy — here we see improved functionality for DC power (electrical power via chemical processes).  So there are two of the three primary means for [...]

I read something, somewhere which suggested that I might be able to post sweet LaTeX generated equations directly, by just using the following tag [tex]…code goes here…[/tex].  So, lets see if it works
[tex]\Phi_m = \int\vec{B}\cdot\hat{n} dA[/tex]
Bah…further “reading” indicates that I will have to install WordPress locally in order to then install some plugin [...]

Ok, perhaps this post is more related to physics 53 material [pressure, fluids and energy] rather than physics 54, but it is highly relevant to the Nicholas School of the Environment and Duke Marine Lab, and it deals with the physics 54 topic of AC-generators.  Besides, it is just cool “sustainable” energy technology.
NASA researchers who [...]

This is a “Dear Wendy” post …
An Indian professor (Indian Institute of Technology] provides another version of the derivation of Faraday’s law — from Coulomb and relativity arguments.   Full math treatment –> ’tis good exposure.  I know… the video is long [57 min], but you can sit down with a glass of your favorite [...]

Oh the possibilities…   I have not seen this movie yet.  This YouTube clip is motivating me to get out to the theatre — yes, I’ll do a little spending to stimulate the economy.  Just doing my patriot spending duty  – how about you?

Are you a physics SUPERHERO?
I think the [...]

So, generally the distance learning set up for lecture has been outstanding.  Wendy and I have a clear view of the board and control from our end.   Dr. Brown welcomes us before each lecture with a smile, a wave and an  acknowledgement, and he displays conscience awareness of us by occasional comments directed toward Wendy.  [...]
